Who is wise? Let them realize these things. Who is discerning? Let them understand. The ways of the Lord are right; the righteous walk in them, but the rebellious stumble in them. – Hosea 14:9

We need wisdom and understanding as we work on our challenges.

How many of us would be excited to meet and spend an hour or so with our favorite author? We could ask them a million questions, share our lives with them, or just savor a great conversation.

Well we can, and it will only cost you about $15 or so – buy their book! Simply buying a book can give us access into the mind and heart of the best experts of our day. We can sit at their feet and benefit from their expertise on a subject.

Let’s review some of my favorites.

  • SettingCaptivesFree.com is the best online resource I’ve found (and used) to overcome impurity, anxiety, depression, weight issues, a lack of faith, and spousal support. They are free, gospel saturated, 60-day interactive lessons that you can have your mentor respond to. Check it out and tell your friends about it!
  • IPI Publishers. Take time to review the many books for sale on this website. Many brothers and sisters in the ICOC have shared their very best insights into how we can live lives as disciples no matter what challenges we face.

Recovery is most often successful when we incorporate many resources. There is a new “holistic” journal out soon called,”Teleios” (in Greek. Teleios means: mature, whole, complete, perfect). It is edited by our brother in the New York City church, Dr. Steve Kinnard, with contributions from all over the Restoration fellowship. Teleios promises to be a wonderful resource to connect us to God as we seek healing in all areas of our lives. While this journal is not specifically geared toward recovery, it will be a rich resource to grow in your faith and love for God, which in turn, provides a foundation for healing.

Finally, use more of your Bible to get help. It is your very best resource to the very heart of God to help His people. Memorize verses. Study narratives. Search deep into the Word to find nuggets of wisdom to overcome or to learn how to live with your struggle. Follow the lives of your Bible heroes through their valleys and mountains. And most importantly, keep your eyes fixed on Jesus and his amazingly creative heart to heal us!

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. For through wisdom your days will be many, and years will be added to your life. If you are wise, your wisdom will reward you; if you are a mocker, you alone will suffer. – Psalm 9:10-12
