Instead, it is held in divine tension, a beautiful, dynamic balance where seemingly opposing truths coexist, each completing and guarding the other.

This is no abstract theological idea. God has stamped the same pattern onto the universe itself. Look at creation. Gravitational pull keeps planets in orbit while inertia prevents them from crashing inward. Ecosystems stay healthy only because predator and prey hold each other in check. In music, tension and release create beauty. Even our own bodies require the delicate balance of eating, sleeping, and exercising; imbalance quickly leads to illness. Romans 1:20 reminds us that “God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made.” The same God who designed these physical tensions has filled His Word with spiritual ones.

Throughout the Bible, God reveals truth not as either/or but as both/and. We see it in the Trinity, one God in three persons. We see it in Christ being fully human and fully divine. We see it in the way God’s sovereignty and human responsibility stand side by side. Once you begin to notice these sacred tensions, you cannot unsee them. They run through the whole of Scripture like guardrails on the narrow path of orthodoxy.

Jesus Himself is the perfect embodiment of divine tension. He is both the Lion of the tribe of Judah – fierce, majestic, and conquering (Revelation 5:5), and the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Gentle, sacrificial, and meek (John 1:29). He is “full of grace and truth” (John 1:14). Most of us lean one way or the other: we are known either for blunt truth-telling or for kind graciousness. Jesus held both in full measure.

The same pattern appears in the commands He gives us. We are told not to judge (Matthew 7:1) and yet to judge correctly (John 7:24). Proverbs 26:4 says, “Do not answer a fool according to his folly,” only for the very next verse to instruct us to go ahead and answer him. Jesus sends us out as “shrewd as snakes” and “innocent as doves” and (Matthew 10:16). Polar opposites held together in the same breath. These are not contradictions to be explained away. They are tensions to be embraced. In the articles ahead we will unpack each of these (and many more) carefully, showing how they protect and deepen one another.

Why are we so uncomfortable with tension? Watch almost any Hollywood movie. Tension builds, a threat, a misunderstanding, a looming disaster and we squirm in our seats until the hero resolves it. The story must end with clear victory, closure, and simplicity. Unresolved tension frustrates us. We feel the same way about theology. We want clean answers, simple systems, and verses that confirm what we already prefer. So, we try to resolve the tension as quickly as possible, picking one side and downplaying the other. The result is that we often swing like a pendulum from one extreme to the other.

One generation over-emphasises grace and slides into licence, the next over-corrects with law and falls into legalism. One leader stresses God’s sovereignty and risks fatalism; another highlights human responsibility and drifts into self-reliance. These swings have fractured the Church for centuries. Instead of embracing the tension and allowing both truths to stand in their full strength, we rush to collapse them into something more comfortable and one-dimensional.

Learning to find the divine tension in every subject is the antidote. It will transform your personal Bible study. When you approach any topic, you are not finished studying it until you have identified what holds it in balance, what is the “Lamb” to this “Lion,” the right and left borders of the truth. Hold both sides and you are protected from heresy on the one hand and shallow faith on the other. Emphasizing grace without repentance leads to permissive worldliness; stressing deeds without faith breeds legalism. The tension keeps us on the path.

In the articles that follow we will explore many of these tensions, not to create confusion, but to discover the breathtaking fullness of God’s wisdom. Holding truths in tension does not dilute them; it deepens and protects them. It trains us to live with the same kind of holy tension that Jesus Himself carried so perfectly.

Are you ready to move beyond simplistic either/or thinking and embrace the rich, life-giving both/and of Scripture?

Then come with me. Let’s discover the divine tension that draws us closer to the heart of our infinitely wise God.

For reflection

What tension do you already sense in a subject you are currently studying?

How might over-emphasising one side of that tension lead to imbalance in your faith or practice?

Where have you noticed yourself wanting to “resolve” a biblical tension instead of living in it?

In part 2, we’ll explore the wisdom literature in scripture through this lens.

Tension pair

Scripture examples

Imbalance risks

Faith / deeds

James 2:26, Ephesians 2:8-9

Legalism or license

Repentance / grace

Hebrews 10:26-31, Ephesians 2:8-9

Burdensome guilt or presumption

Love / truth

Psalm 85:10

Sentimentality or harshness

Sovereignty / free will

Ephesians 1:11, Deuteronomy 30:19

Fatalism or self-reliance

Justice / mercy

Psalm 103:8-10, Romans 3:25-26

Despair or cheap grace

Watch my sermon on this topic below, starting at the 52 minute mark.

<span class="embed-youtube" style="text-align:center;
