My daughter Avery fell in love with lacrosse when she was 12, and there was no looking back. The next year she fell in love with Jesus, and again, there was no looking back. She went all in for him. Ever since, we’ve been on a journey: What does it mean for a student athlete to love Jesus and sports with her whole heart? How can God’s Word support her athletic life, shaping her into a teammate and competitor who honors the Lord? How can she shine a light for Jesus through the way she trains, receives coaching, relates to teammates, and plays the sport she loves?

Every year I’ve walked with Avery through the ups and downs of intense sports seasons: the joys of competition, the academic pressures, the desire to honor God, the exhaustion and overwhelm of balancing multiple pressures on a tight schedule. And every year, we have searched for a sports-themed devotional book that would help her stay deeply connected with God during the busyness of the season. This book was born out of that search and our family’s journey. In Season is a true passion project, a labor of love for my girl Avery—and all the “Averys” out there who love the Lord and sports.

This book is designed to be a playbook to help female athletes walk with God as they run after athletic dreams. I pray it provides a way for parents, grandparents, and youth mentors to support the faith of the sporty girls they love. I hope it serves as an evangelistic tool for Christian girls who want to point teammates and friends to God. I pray these words remind athletes that as much as they love sports, they love God more—and he loves them most. They are more than their stats, more than their skills, and more than their sport. They are daughters of God—and that never changes.

From the press release

In Season is a comprehensive 90-day devotional created specifically for female student-athletes. The book is one of the first of its kind and provides a practical guide for girls seeking to prioritize their spiritual growth while managing the heavy demands of sports, difficult academic schedules, and personal relationships.

In Season offers a blend of interactive goal-setting, weekly progress check-ins, reflection questions, and journaling prompts. Through daily Scripture-infused reflections, the devotional helps athletes process the heavy pressure to win while holding on to the simple excitement of the game.

The content also moves beyond basic advice by sharing real-world stories from diverse female athletes. These stories feature competitors at every level, from high school varsity teams to professional leagues. In Season pairs these personal experiences with practical exercises that encourage readers to build resilience, cultivate deep confidence, and find joy on and off the field. The daily readings guide young women as they learn to walk with God, foster strong teamwork, develop vital leadership skills, and maintain a growth mindset through both victories and losses.

Six-time Olympic medalist Jackie Joyner-Kersee praised the book’s powerful message and themes. “This devotional beautifully captures the heart of what sports can teach us, not merely about competition but about purpose, faith, and the strength of the human spirit,” Joyner-Kersee said. “[Elizabeth Laing Thompson’s] words resonate deeply with my spirit and will undoubtedly inspire readers at every stage of their journey on the field and in life.”

As the focus on women’s sports is increasing around the world and people are celebrating female athletes in greater numbers, the time is ripe for a spiritually rich and practical resource that equips student-athletes to thrive in every area of life. In Season offers girls the guidance and encouragement they need to succeed mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.
