As thousands of workers over the age of 40 find themselves displaced or concerned about their viability in the workplace, many in the U.S. feel there is catastrophe around the corner. The advancement of technology and automation are just some of the challenges an aging workforce faces. The Boston Church of Christ Not Your Average Singles (NYAS) recently held a church-wide “Navigating the Workforce at Your Age” workshop as a response to our national workplace displacement issue.
The workshop addressed the challenges of pursuing a job over the age of 40, making a career change in your later life and increasing your earning potential. NYAS partnered with local groups such as the Urban League of MA, Catholic Charities, and Cambridge College and Career Collaborative to inform the audience about programs for mature workers. This workshop was facilitated by a Senior Professional in Human Resources, Martin Ellis, SHRM-CP, SPHR, who is a member of the Southern Cities Region of the Boston Church. This workshop provided opportunities for people of all life experiences and educational backgrounds. Our local groups welcomed all – those without high school diploma to those with multiple graduate degrees. Our workshop included the following topics: age-proofing your resume, methods to enhance your skill set and information about government/college programs.
Both singles and marrieds packed the event! The cross-section of Christians and community professional speakers provided practical and spiritual guidance that took away the sting of unemployment and the fear of transitioning to a new job or career at this age. The speakers were available before and after the event to answer questions about the next steps in one’s employment journey.
After the workshop, I did not feel overwhelmed. I felt encouraged and empowered with tools and clear next steps to take my career to the next level. It was one of the best workshops I’ve attended in my 38-yearChristian walk.
The challenge will not be resolved with one workshop. NYAS will host a series of workshops, with the next one in March 2020. The goal of all our workshops is to develop the talents God has given us as we face our future with faith.
Not Your Average Singles is a group of singles in the Boston Church of Christ who are faithful to God after being single for a long time or becoming single again, or those who perhaps have been in the Lord more years than they have not. We started this group with the heart to encourage the saints through our gifts and life experiences. If you want more details, contact Angela Perry [email protected].
