Greater Nashville Church is a vibrant, multigenerational, and culturally diverse church family of approximately 350 members across our Nashville congregation and recently planted sister congregation in Clarksville, Tennessee. Together, we are committed to growing as disciples of Jesus, building meaningful relationships, and sharing the hope of Christ throughout Middle Tennessee and beyond. The evangelist would serve alongside our elders, core team, ministry leaders, and small group leaders in a church committed to shared leadership and the work of the whole body.

Our vision

“To become a living expression of God’s Kingdom, where all people can find a place to belong, and disciples of every generation are transformed and inspired to carry the love of Jesus from Middle Tennessee to the nations.”

The role

This role centers on three responsibilities: preaching the Word, developing leaders for mission, and helping our church maintain an outward focus.

Preach: The evangelist will serve as our primary preaching voice, proclaiming Scripture with clarity, conviction, and compassion. We are looking for someone who will preach regularly while also making room for other voices in the life of the church.

  • Speak regularly as the congregation’s primary preacher, without being expected to preach every week.
  • Help shape the church’s preaching direction in collaboration with the elders and others involved in teaching and preaching.
  • Preach messages that are relatable, practical, and grounded in Scripture, helping the congregation connect our vision and core values to their everyday lives
  • Encourage and develop other capable preachers so the church benefits from multiple voices while maintaining a clear and consistent direction.

Train: The evangelist will help develop leaders who can faithfully lead their particular ministries and small groups in ways that advance the evangelistic mission of the church. The evangelist helps leaders become more effective at caring for, developing, and preparing the people entrusted to them for works of service.

  • Equip ministry staff, small group leaders, and ministry leaders in evangelism and mission-focused leadership.
  • Help leaders shepherd the people within their areas of responsibility in ways that encourage spiritual growth, participation, and engagement in the mission of the church.
  • Establish sustainable training rhythms and resources that can be carried forward by others.
  • Identify and develop emerging leaders across all generations and backgrounds, entrusting meaningful responsibility as they grow.
  • Establish and prioritize a mentoring relationship with the evangelist at the Clarksville Community Church

Lead an outward focus: The evangelist will help keep evangelism and mission in front of the congregation, encouraging us to build genuine relationships with people beyond our church and helping new people find a meaningful place within it. This outward focus should strengthen—not compete with—the life of the congregation already here.

  • Champion evangelism as a normal part of following Jesus and the shared responsibility of the church.
  • Help ministries and small groups connect what they do to the broader evangelistic mission of the church.
  • Encourage genuine relationships with our neighbors and help create pathways for new people to become connected to the life of the congregation.
  • Keep the congregation engaged in both local outreach and global missions.

Share in operational leadership

The evangelist will also serve as part of the church’s operational leadership group, a six-to-seven person body that carries operational authority for the church. The evangelist will contribute to decisions that affect the direction and day-to-day ministry of the congregation. This includes areas such as ministry priorities, staffing, budgets, and leadership development. Responsibilities and decision-making authority will be clearly defined as part of the hiring process.

We have five nested tiers of leadership, and we have written down what each one decides. This matters enough that we want it to be clear before application.

  • Elders — hold doctrinal authority and a standing override on any decision. The evangelist will function under the oversight of the elders.
  • Core Team — holds operational authority for the church. The evangelist serves here as a peer.
  • Full leadership — elders, core team and ministry leaders who own their areas and meet monthly to report progress, obstacles, and shape direction.
  • Small group leaders — help foster community, encourage discipleship, and care for members within their groups
  • Members — the body, gifted and expected to do the work of ministry.
