Key Objective

The NVCOC is seeking a full-time Chief Financial Officer (CFO). The CFO will be responsible for the overall financial management and implementation of church finance activities, including planning, budgeting, forecasting, risk-management and governance duties. The CFO is also responsible for HR management including benefits and payroll and managing the part-time administration staff. The CFO will report directly to the Board of Directors and collaborate with the lead evangelist(s)/senior pastor, elder(s) (if any), ministry staff, and deacons, in developing current and strategic financial objectives, policies, and procedures. In addition, the CFO will assist the lead evangelist (senior pastor), ministry staff, and volunteers with the daily operations of the church. 

This will be a full-time position. Pay will be in the form of an annual salary commensurate with education and experience. 

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: 

  1. Must be a baptized disciple and in good standing. 
  2. Spiritually mature character having strong personal integrity and interpersonal skills who can ethically conduct themselves handling the responsibilities of confidential information relative to managing the church. 
  3. Exceptional verbal, written, visual communication and organizational skills. 
  4. Knowledge and skill of accounting principles, payroll, and payroll taxes. 
  5. Strong knowledge and skill in accounting, budgeting, financial and operational management controls, data analysis, risk management, and forecasting methods. 
  6. Proficient using MS Office products and financial management software (QuickBooks Online, etc.) 
  7. Experience with databases, project, and knowledge management software systems. 
  8. Minimum three years relevant work experience. 

Desired Qualifications: 

  1. CPA certification. 
  2. Experience with accounting and/or financial management for churches or other nonprofits. 
  3. Knowledge of ministry taxes such as parsonage and other related church payroll issues. 
  4. Ability to effectively interact with all levels of church staff and membership, including excellent people skills and a caring attitude with those who have needs (pastoral and ministry skills). 
  5. Knowledge and skill in both developing and delivery of training materials and programs that can address congregational objectives. 
  6. Knowledge and experience with churches, non-profits, or corporate organizations assessing their strengths and development needs, clarifying roles and responsibilities, establishing performance standards, and training of staff and volunteers. 
  7. Experience dealing with outside vendors and trainers to contract for goods and services, connection with other International Church of Christ (ICOC) churches, and knowledge and understanding of current ICOC events and meetings. 

Northern Virginia Church of Christ (NVCOC) Full-time Chief Financial Officer Position 

Major duties and responsibilities

Accounting: 

  1. Prepare journal entries and keep accounting books. 
  2. Perform monthly closings and bank reconciliations. 
  3. Prepare and distribute Monthly Financial Statements and Rolling Forecast to the evangelist, board, and elders. 
  4. Draft annual Church Budget and monitor adherence to it. 
  5. Coordinate and oversee annual financial review/audit with outside accounting firm. 
  6. Ensure accounting systems and reporting books are maintained. 

Payroll and Personnel: 

  1. Oversee the processing of new hires and terminations. 
  2. Maintain adequate personnel files and all necessary documentation. 
  3. Process payroll. 
  4. Review and approve payroll check registers and payroll tax reports 
  5. Maintain all payroll and personnel files. 
  6. Interface with IRS on any payroll tax issues. 
  7. Maintain all employee benefits (health, dental, group term life, long-term disability, retirement, flexible spending accounts, health savings accounts, etc.). 
  8. Oversee annual employee evaluation process 

Insurance & Risk Management: 

  1. Ensure that the church has adequate general liability insurance, worker’s compensation insurance, and umbrella insurance. 
  2. Submit recommended coverage proposals to Board for approval. 
  3. Regularly work with congregational staff, volunteers, and legal personnel making sure youth ministry activities are complying with insurance requirements. 
  4. Keep abreast of current risk issues affecting churches. 

Missions: 

  1. Adhere to US government best practices for anti-terrorist funding. 
  2. Maintain documentation of notice given to congregation regarding intended mission distribution. 

Systems/Fixed Assets: 

  1. Ensure church has adequate systems to support operating in an efficient manner. 
  2. Coordinate maintenance of the computer systems that include proper backup, firewalls, filtering, and timely upgrades of software and hardware. 
  3. Recommend modern computers and other critical equipment to Board for approval. 

Policies: 

  1. Ensure all church policies and procedures manuals are implemented and followed. 
  2. Recommend and develop supplemental policies for local church issues. 

Board of Directors: 

  1. Advise the Board of Directors on all legal, financial, and risk issues. 
  2. Draft Board minutes. 
  3. Draft Board Resolutions. 
  4. Maintain all Board minutes and corporate documents. 
  5. Maintain documentation of notice given to congregation of corporate meetings 
  6. Complete special projects assigned by the Board. 
  7. Attend Board meetings as requested. 

Staff Meetings: Attend weekly staff meetings with ministry staff. 

Supervisory Responsibility: Supervise other office staff including part-time administration staff if applicable. 

Reporting relationships: 

  1. Reports frequently to the Board of Directors. 
  2. Collaborates with the Lead Evangelist (Senior Pastor) and interfaces with the leadership team.
